For our trip to Peru my partner and I wanted to not only see the history and sights of Peru, but really understand the culture and people. We decided to book through CocalTours and Lokal Travel because of the types of excursions they offered AND because they had local people leading the tours. While the trip was a bit of a splurge for us, it did not disappoint! They made the logistics extremely easy, everyone we worked with was very knowledgeable, friendly and professional, and we left Peru wanting to send all our friends (and go back!) soon. Some highlights:-David was the primary contact for organizing the trip and took care of all the logistics. He was communicative and adapted to rapidly changing COVID travel requirements to ensure we had the trip we wanted. Guides, transportation, lodging and (most) food was taken care of, making this a very easy trip for us.-Our main guides were Omar for the Sacred Valley tour and cacao farm stay, and Elio for the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu. Both men had extensive knowledge of the history of the region from pre-civilization to current events. They grew up in the region and could tell us both the history they had studied and about their family history. We enjoyed spending time with them.-Sacred Valley tour gave us a fantastic overview of the pre-Inca and Inca communities. We enjoyed Moray, Maris and Ollantaytambo. Eat at Koricancha Cafe in Ollantaytambo. Omar recommended it for lunch and we liked it so much we went back for dinner!-We did the one-day Inca Trail (7 miles/10 km) and it was a great way to reach Machu Picchu. It was a moderate hike with lots of beautiful scenery and historical Inca places that you get to hike through - very cool. You enter Machu Picchu at the Sun Gate (essentially from above) and having that view, which few people get to experience, was absolutely stunning.-The next day we entered Machu Picchu around 6:30am. There were very few people and we were able to catch the sun coming up. Wow. It was magic. Try to time it to go when there are fewer people.-Our last day we traveled into the jungle to do a farm stay with Julia and Jose. They have a small family farm that grows cacao, coffee, bananas, yucca...lots of amazing things! We ate delicious food, got to know the family, roasted our own coffee and made hot chocolate literally from picking the cacao pod off the tree to cup, and learned about their way of life. If you really want to know Peruvians (not just the history, but people now) we recommend this farm stay.A few tips:-Expect bumpy and windy roads. The drivers took extra care with us, but to get to these places you have to utilize roads that are not in the best condition.-Bring not just bug spray, but also loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirt and pants. The mosquitos were brutal in the jungle.
